What endometriosis apps may still be missing
Do our symptom trackers capture the disease people are actually living with?
A new npj Digital Medicine study (available as an unedited early-access manuscript) tested a patient-tailored, researcher-guided approach. In this study, 34 women with endometriosis built their own symptom lists and tracked them daily for up to 12 months.
The results:
- The median participant tracked 24.5 symptoms.
- 228 symptoms were recorded across just 34 participants.
- Each participant tracked a unique symptom set.
The authors are clear that not every symptom recorded is necessarily caused by endometriosis. But capturing the fuller picture may help researchers identify patterns to build better frameworks for studying a disease that varies enormously from person to person.
